Health Questions
What is vertigo?
Vertigo is the false perception of movement. The causes of vertigo vary from the Benign which, in the majority of instances, DizzyStop® is preferred, safe and effective for management. Other conditions such as migraine, benign tumors, hardening of the arteries, neurodegenerative disorders and Meniere’s disease which may also cause vertigo are not benefitted by DizzyStop®.
What is benign vertigo?
Viral inflammation of the inner ear membranes is also known as labyrinthitis. These infections may range from mild to severe and last from a few weeks to a few months. Mild cases respond very well with use of DizzyStop®. Symptoms of vertigo with inner ear infection may include whirling, lightheadedness, and spinning associated with position changing. For persistent symptoms consult your Ear Specialist.
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo is a very common condition in which a microchip of inner ear calcium or “sludge” dislodges from the inner ear jelly like membrane to which it is normally attached and by floating disconnected can cause a false signal of motion to the brain on position changing resulting in the unpleasant vertigo. The cause is thought to be a minor trauma such as bumping the head.
Symptoms of whirling, lightheadedness, and nausea are concerning but usually brief, lasting a few seconds to a minute and often brought on by rolling over in bed from one side to the other or looking up or bending down. The name of the condition is accurate in that it is benign but it is disabling. The vertigo can be controlled by turning the head away from the position that provoked it and tends to resolve after a few days to a few weeks. Repositioning is a noninvasive series of maneuvers to float the loose chips out of harm’s way.
Benign Positional Vertigo is a condition which responds well with DizzyStop® until one is able to see an Ear Specialist for Canalith Repositioning.
What is motion sickness?
This is often referred to as car sickness, sea sickness, air sickness and/or space sickness. Motion sickness may occur in movie theatres (in particular when viewing action scenes), trams, elevators and all other conditions in which there is very little relative motion. Platform testing in Balance clinics has taught us that the visual [eyes] vestibular [inner ear balance canals] and somatosensory impulses [information from the sense of touch] must be coordinated in the brain to provide balance and freedom from vertigo.
If there is a disconnect associated with limited visual information, such as the environment in motion (e.g. a ship’s cabin or back seat of a car), motion sickness may result. On the other hand, amusement rides which are simulated as well as video games and movies that stimulate the visual system without vestibular or proprioceptive input may also cause motion sickness. This is another form of mismatch resulting in motion sickness. This is a condition that responds very well with the use of DizzyStop® without side effects of drowsiness.

How do I manage my motion sickness?
Brain and adaptation:
The cerebellum of the brain may adapt to sensory changes that evoke motion sickness and adaptation exercises can be beneficial.
Pharmacologic therapy [Drug therapy]:
Antihistamines, e.g. Meclizine, block dopamine receptors in the brain. Side effects include drowsiness. Muscarinic antagonists, e.g. scopolamine, blocks acetyl choline. Side effects include of dry mouth blurred vision, drowsiness and short term memory impairment.
Natural and Herbal Therapies:
DizzyStop® is preferred for motion sickness because of its efficacy, safety and lack of the side effect of drowsiness. The mechanism of action is thought to be blocking of the release or uptake of activating hormone at the level of the Central Nervous System when conditions of motion cause excess release of these hormones. The vertigo under these circumstances is relieved without the side effects of drowsiness.
How does DizzyStop® control nausea?
The mechanism of action is thought to be the reduction of excess gastric activity associated with motion and the decrease in release of a hormone responsible for causing nausea. Research has shown that the herbals in DizzyStop® effectively control the nausea of motion sickness, the nausea of pregnancy, the nausea of chemotherapy, and the nausea of postoperative gynecologic surgery equally or more effectively than drugs and without the side effects.
Multiple studies confirm the effectiveness and safety of the Herbals in DizzyStop® for the nausea of pregnancy without complications of miscarriage or birth defects.
Are there side effects associated with taking DizzyStop®?
DizzyStop® causes no side effects of drowsiness. While no instances of problems with patients on blood thinners have been reported, it is recommended to consult with your prescribing Doctor if you are taking Blood thinners. Occasional after taste may occur but is not a significant problem.
